Our third year at the Spitfire Scramble event was our most successful one to date. Having previously entered only two teams, 2019 saw us take FIVE teams! As in previous years, we entered the mixed large teams category (6-8 runners per team) and arranged them to be approximately equal. However, this year we loaded all our strongest runners into one team for a crack at the category prize.

With so many first-timers in the squad, the atmosphere in the camp was fantastic. For those who were coming back for their second or third event, half the fun was showing the newbies the ropes, and watching as they too fell in love with the event. Our huge sqaud meant that there was always someone to hang out with between laps, and there was never a dull moment.

As the night wore on into the morning it became evident that our All Stars team was right well in the mix at the front of the race, and in with a good chance of winning. Meanwhile our four equal teams were having a terrific tussle for bragging rights, and ultimately all finished within ten positions of each other. When the siren wailed to signal the end of the race, the Eton Manor All Stars team was victorious, completing 36 laps in 24 hours and with a 2 lap margin over the second-placed team.

Everybody leaves the Spitfire Scramble in varying stages of physical and emotional disarray, but through those weary eyes shines the joy of having had literally the most fun it’s possible to have in a field. Full kudos to each and everyone one who took part, you all did the Manor proud. See you next year for more of the same. UTM!
